Robert Franks essay

Robert Franks

Robert frank is indeed one of my favourite photographers of all time. I enjoy looking at his pictures and the way he captures moments perfectly blows me away. In my mind, each picture of his has a story behind it. He’s known for a series of photos in the book called “THE Americans”- With a total of 83 pictures. The book was first published in Paris in 1958, but then the book was so big in Paris, it made its way to the United states in the 1960’s. Robert has a interesting photographic method, “characterized by bold composition and ironic, sometimes bitter, social commentary.” his exquisite ways made him what he is today and got him noticed as well.

In my opinion Robert captures a lot of different photos, of emotions, loneliness and even love. For some reason, from these facial expressions it seems like they desire change in their life to be happy. For example this picture below on the right, it seems this girl is praying for something better to happen. In my mind it’s as she’s praying for a happier, better life and that she wants more than what she has already. The one on the left, it seems this young man loves this woman. But something’s wrong by the way he’s looking away. But whatever might be wrong, he still holds on to her And seems that he won’t give up on her. The woman isn’t showing much face, but by the way she’s sitting with her head down, seems as something is bothering her- although she is still holding on to him.

When i looked through most of Robert Franks photos i noticed something. Most of the woman in the book SEEMS all sad and depressed. Maybe Robert wanted to show all sad women cause of the woman’s rights back then. Such as these photos below, you see that all the woman are depressed. I don’t know if he did this on purpose, or maybe its just what I think. It could be Robert randomly taking pictures of them and them looking unimpressed, it’s even possible he wanted them to look that way.

“ the Americans” is known as one of the most important/memorable books in photography since world II. Robert took 28,000 travelling all around the US visiting Detroit and Dearborn, Michigan; Savannah, Georgia; Miami Beach and St. Petersburg, Florida; New Orleans, Louisiana; Houston, Texas; Los Angeles, California; Reno, Nevada; Salt Lake City, Utah; Butte, Montana; and Chicago, Illinois. Only 83 photos was chosen to be published by Robert. Robert brought his kids and wife through most of travels. The Americans was really just Robert travelling around taking pictures of people. So, in 1955 he secured a grant because he was from Switzerland and then travelled in 1955 all across US and photographed his strata of its society.

As i said before, Robert captures sadness, loneliness and different emotions- a lot of mixture of different things. But surely mostly all of his photos have a story behind them. I really like Robert franks because i feel like he takes pictures of what he really likes and doesn’t care about what people say.. My theory is that he tried to capture emotion from people and tries to tell a story behind it. Because when i look at them a story forms in my head.

Blue Screen Print

I choose this piece I took last summer with one of my old cameras. I was at my grandpa cottage, and it was around 8, and the sun was setting. It was possibly one the most memorable moments of my life and a perfect scenery.

PhotoGram

I designed my photogram, to show what happened 230 million years ago. The things on the top of the photogram show asteroids destroying and coming down on the dinosaurs. The sticks are to show a normal plant. I just wanted to show a piece of history. So I made a dinosaur, asteroids and trees out of the things around the room.

Monalisa

Without a doubt, the Monalisa is one of the most well known paintings in the world- Its also one of the most expensive paintings in the world as well. The painting has been expiring artists and other people for centuries. It has been said even the lips took around 10 years to paint! The subject in the painting is named Lisa Gherardini. The painter (Leonardo da vinci) was not known for the Monalisa but a lot of things such as sketching the first parachute in the 15th century, anatomy studies, and a lot more. Leonardo wasn’t just valued as a painter but as a engineer.

Leonardo was born April 15, 1452 and died May 02, 1519. He was born in Vinci, Itlay. He was a Italian painter, sculptor, architect, and a engineer- he went beyond all those. The last supper and the monalisa are both very popular in the Renaissance. When he was a kid, his curiosity sprung by nature and water. His parents weren’t together at the time he was born. He was a only child until the age of 25 after his farther went through two wifes. His farthers name was Ser Piero, and his moms name was caterina. In 1482 he moved to Milan( where he lived for 17 years) to work in the service of the city’s duke. Where he drew military weapons and did some art for the duke. He spent three years (1483-86) drawing the altar painting called The Virgin of the rocks, which he didn’t finished. In 1489 he finally gets what he wants, the duke allows Leonardo to make the giant horse in memory of the dukes farther. Around this time he has his own work shop were he acquires a assistant. His name was sly(devil), he stood by Leonardo’s side for the rest of his life. He made one of his best painting in Milan called the Last supper, which only took him three years. In 1503 he moved back to Florence, where he made a expert survey of a project that attempted to divert the Arno river behind pisa, so that the city, the under siege by the Florentines, would be deprived of access to the sea. It turned that the project was unworkable. But Leonardo made a plan to make a large canal In the same year, he made one the worlds most well known painting called the Monalisa. In may 1506 the French governor in Milan asked him to travel with him to Milan. The governor asked the Signoria in Florence if Leonardo could travel with him. He let him go One the popes was mad at Leonardo cause he was dissecting human bodies. Which was illegal. In the winter of 1507 Leonardo went back to Florence, were he helped sculpted a bronze statues for the Florence Baptistery, after that he then settled back in Milan.  In 1508 he finished The Virgin Rocks. In the last years of Leonardo life, he had to move again. So the 60 year old Leonardo moved to rome- Where he lived for three years. Then at the age of 65 where a young king invited him, to enter his service in France. So, at the end of 1516 he left Italy forever, together with Melzi and sly. In Leonardo’s last few years, he lived in a small residence of Cloux, near the kings summer palace. He died in Cloux and was buried in the place church of Saint-Florentin. But the church was destroyed in the French revolution. When he died, he left all his paintings and drawing to his closest friends which were his assistants.

Leonardo had tones of famous painting. Besides the monalisa, the next one in my opinion was the Last supper. Leonardo sketched a lot of machines such a the giant crossbow, water lifting devices, flying machines, multi barrel gun, spring device and even a auto-mobile. He did a lot of studys of the body system too. He was a brilliant man, trying to help everyone else. For some reason Leonardo left his painting unfinished. By making machines and trying to expire others with his beautiful art. By the looks of it, Leonardo’s favorite thing was doing portraits of people.

Painting with Light

The first one came out the way i wanted to. The rest were just ones of me playing around with painting with light. The first one i wanted it be like a vortex. It looks pretty cool with all the different colors. The second one i attempted to try to like bear claw scratches but it didnt work that well. For the third one i tried to paint the camera, but i couldnt make it as detailed as i wanted it.

Natural Lighting

In this picture my subject is faced at the camera, the picture was taken around 8 in the morning. I picked out this sweater to make some color pop. I then used a reflector dish to show more lighting on the left side. I find in the morning, you get the best natural lighting.

STUDIO LIGHTING

Model: My cousin Alex

I took around 50 pictures, playing with the lighting. I would place it all around Alex, and try different lights my Aunt had. The first one came out the best, you can clearly see his face, and his face sort of pops out and stands out. For the 2nd one I placed the lighting so its a bit dim on the right side of his face, not so dim you cant see it though, but perfect enough you can see its a bit dark. The last picture i just wanted to do one that you cant really see the left side, it came out pretty good.

My name all across Oakville

I choose these letters cause i think they're were really cool and represented the letters in my name the best. I also chose all them, because all these spots are near were i grew up. These spots were i grew up were some the best memories of my life. Its were i first learned how to ride a bike. I spent tones of time with my brothers and my friends. I chose black and white, because it looks better like that, and all the words are more similar in the same colour.

Adam Warmington is a photographer that inspires me

This is a picture taken by Adam Warmington, in San Francisco . I enjoy Adam's photos, he really captures a lot nice shots. He also takes a lot of pictures of the ocean and surfers, which both of those interests me. Adam is known very well in surfing photography. He tries to tell a story behind each story, and have meaning behind a photo aswell. Some of my favorites of Adams photos are the ones of waves, they are very artsy and pretty. Some of his work are published in SurferThe Surfers Path,Transworld, Water, Line Up, and Surfline amongst others.http://www.clubofthewaves.com/surf-photographer/adam-warmington.php
